For this assignment I went to Target because of the variety of brands and also it doesn't hurt to do a little shopping on the side! I mostly stuck to two brands, Massimo and Who What Wear. Massimo is the brand that I noticed the biggest difference in manufacture "errors." I tried on two small sizes of the same shirt and saw that one was a bit lopsided and the other was surprisingly larger than the supposed identical shirt I had tried on first. Overall, it was neat to see all the differences in what was supposed to be identical items, I had never paid attention to it before.
My project was a simple tank that tied in the front and was made from two different materials; it's supposed to feel and look very natural and simplistic. One of the key words in designing this top was organic. In this assignment, I realized that the business side of the industry is pretty meticulous in terms of math and determining the prices of materials to calculate the retail price. I also saw that buying in bulk doesn't always mean it will be cheaper than if you just buy a yard of what you need at Hobby Lobby or some other fabric store but even so the manufacturing route still turned out to be less expensive than the "in-house" version. It was eye opening because I'm interested in creating my own items to sell and now I understand the process better.
